A Bird Finding Guide to McHenry County Specialties

 
  1. Loons:  Vulcan Lake [Crystal Lake, can be seen from road], Silver Lake, Chain-o-Lakes (March,   
  2. Bitterns: Exner Marsh [Lake in the Hills] (May & June)  (April, &  September)
  3. Heron Rookery: Lyons Prairie Boardwalk at Hickory Grove [Cary}
  4. Black-crowned Night Heron: Frequently feeds at McHenry Dam in the breeding season.
  5. Wood Ducks: McHenry Dam at Moraine Hills State Park, Tamarack View Trail at Volo Bog
  6. Northern Harrier: Grasslands at Glacial Park  (easier in winter)
  7. Rough-legged Hawk: Winter at Glacial Park, or open farm country
  8. Wild Turkey: Woods at Glacial Park (especially on the south end), Bull Valley. Their range is expanding.  Volo Bog has started reporting them. 
  9. Virginia Rail: Marsh boardwalk at Volo Bog, & Pike Marsh at Moraine Hills State Park (May  and June)
  10. Sora Rail: Marsh boardwalk at Volo Bog , McHenry Dam & Pike Marsh at Moraine Hills State Park
  11. Common Moorhen: McHenry Dam at Moraine Hills State Park
  12. Sandhill Crane:  Tamarack View Trail at Volo Bog, Moraine Hills State ParkCotton Creek Marsh  [Island Lake], Glacial Park
  13. Shorebirds: Lost Valley Marsh in Glacial Park (May & August) Wilson’s Phalarope turns up with reasonable frequency during migration.
  14. Black Tern:  The marsh restoration at Chain-o-Lakes State Park, Black-crown Marsh by Moraine Hills State Park, and they used to be at McHenry  Dam in Black Tern Marsh.
  15. Forster’s Tern:  Historically nested on Grass Lake in Chain-o-Lakes State Park???
  16. Short-eared Owl: Glacial Park in winter, dusk behind the old farm buildings north to the Nippersink.  This area is off limits to cars, you will need to walk.
  17. Whip-poor-will: Marengo Ridge or Bull Valley at night at the beginning of May.
  18. Ruby-throated Hummingbird:  Marengo Ridge
  19. Willow Flycatcher: Tamarack View Trail at Volo Bog (June, beyond the 1 mile marker)
  20. Sedge Wren:  Tamarack View Trail at Volo Bog in May & June beyond the 1 mile marker, Lake Defiance Boardwalk at Moraine Hills State Park (May)
  21. Marsh Wren: Pike Marsh at Moraine Hills State Park
  22. Yellow-throated Vireo: McHenry Dam trail along Fox River, and other areas at Moraine Hills State Park.
  23. Warbling Vireo:  Moraine Hills State Park
  24. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher:  Moraine Hills State Park & Volo Bog
  25. Warbler Migration:  Chain-o-Lakes State Park, Moraine Hills State Park, Coral Woods, Glacial Park, Volo Bog, & Lyons Prairie
  26. Prothonotary Warbler:  McHenry Dam at Moraine Hills State Park.  Follow the trail south along the Fox River.  Listen for their loud song.
  27. Ovenbird:  Marengo Ridge
  28. Blue-winged Warbler: Marengo Ridge
  29. American Redstart: McHenry Dam  at Moraine Hills State Park.  They nest near the beginning of the loop trail.
  30. Henslow’s Sparrow: Summer in grassy areas at Glacial Park
  31. Bobolink:  Hickory Grove [Cary], Glacial Park in grasslands, Northern Lakes trail at Moraine Hills State  Park (June) in large fields
  32. Yellow-headed Blackbirds: McHenry Dam at Moraine Hills State Park: Find a viewing stand to the marsh from late April to August.  They should be easy to find.
  33. Lapland Longspurs:  Winter in open areas around Glacial Park, especially western roads.
  34. Snow Buntings: Frequently with the Lapland Longspurs, in open farm country during winter.
